Transitional space is an architectural element that connects private and public areas while facilitating social interaction, particularly in communal housing such as public housing blocks “rusun”. Its presence is believed to foster stronger relationships among residents and enhance quality of life. This study evaluates the applicability of transitional space theory in two types of public housing: Diponegoro University public housing (Student Housing) and Sawah Besar publick housing (Family Housing), through a comparative study employing a descriptive-qualitative approach. The analysis focuses on aspects of accessibility, spatial arrangement, spatial experience, and boundaries. Findings show that although transitional space principles apply in both, the intensity of social interaction is higher in Sawah besar public housing, where the need for interaction is greater. Accordingly, the theory of transitional space should be adapted to the specific characteristics and activity patterns of residents. The study recommends a more adaptive and contextual design approach to transitional space.Downloads
